Mykonian Vibes: Travel Guide to Mykonos, Greece

In Mykonos, you do not simply just see the views.. You breathe them in.

Hello beautiful people, my name is Marian Lee and I’m a good friend of LV’s. Currently admiring my tanned skin and fresh take on life as I just got back from a journey of a lifetime. Linda asked if I could share my trip with you guys and of course I agreed! My husband and I ventured to the dreamy island of Mykonos for a 4-day excursion. It was everything I could have ever dreamt of and more…

WHEN TO GO AND HOW TO GET THERE

Mykonos is extremely busy from June to August. During this time period, the island draws in massive tourist crowds and the hotel prices can be a little bit more pricey. Knowing this, we opted to go in mid-September. The weather was warm during the day with light winds, and cool at night with some crisp air. The sun shines bright daily and the sunsets were beyond jaw-dropping. Seriously the best sunset I have ever seen in my entire existence.

We didn’t utilize a travel agent as I naturally enjoy planning and researching these kind of things. We booked our flights via Priceline. It was the cheapest flight we found for Business Class and for the dates that we wanted. Mykonos is such a small island so the flights to go there are limited (they also tend to cost more). I was expecting to fly into Athens but Priceline gave us another route. I loved our layovers and we really made the most out of every single one of them.

Our flight itinerary on the way there:

Tampa (United Airlines) to Chicago, then to Zurich via Swiss Airlines and last but not least, boarded Edelweiss Airlines to Mykonos! We finally made it! Total travel time was 2 days but trust me, it was so worth it! Our layover in Zurich was 19-hours so we went ahead and booked a hotel for a night using our points and explored the largest city of the Swiss Confederation. (It is the most populated city in Switzerland). Below are some of our pictures from Zurich.

WHERE TO STAY IN MYKONOS

I would highly recommend staying close to Mykonos Town as this is where all the shops, bar, lounges, clubs, restaurants are, as well the best Instagrammable spots for those photo-op moments. Having followed Cavo Tagoo Mykonos on Instagram for quite some time now, we chose to stay there. This place has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. Seeing their Cave Pool Suite in person really took my breath away! The hotel resort is by far, the best place we have ever stayed at! (The social media hype was 10x more amazing in real life!). There are also tons of other hotels as well as Airbnbs within the area of Mykonos Town if you don’t want to stay at Cavo Tagoo.

Some hotels are only open from May to October (during the warmer weather) so make sure to double-check.

MYKONOS DAY 1

We arrived at the Mykonos Airport (airport code is JMK) at 9:50AM on a Wednesday. The airport is fairly small so it didn’t take us a long time to get out of there at all. Upon exiting the airport, our hotel shuttle was already waiting for us. I had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival at JMK to inquire about this free service.

Once we got on the hotel vehicle, our driver instantly offered us water bottles and some wet wipes. I thought this was such a nice gesture! Our hotel was only 10-minutes away from the airport so we got there in no time. The main entrance of the hotel looked like a scene from Game of Thrones but in a brighter, summer kind of way. The entire property also smelled divine.

Our check-in process at the hotel was stress-free. One of the front desk personnel let us know that our room will not be ready until 2PM since it still needed to be cleaned. They gladly took our luggages while my husband and I explored the hotel. Maria, one of the Greek goddesses of the hotel’s concierge (I am not kidding, everyone at that hotel looked picturesque!) sat down with us to go over what Mykonos and the hotel had to offer. She went over the hot spots, things to do, places to see, foods to eat, activities and more! After which, she walked us over to the hotel’s restaurant so we can partake on their splendid breakfast buffet. Wow. Just wow! This breakfast spread is one of the best I’ve seen! The set-up was beautiful, the food and the juices were fresh (I drank cantaloupe juice everyday like it was my damn business lol), eggs made fresh to order, pastries of all sorts, mueslis, sausages and bacon, hard-boiled eggs (some cooked for 4 minutes and some for 8 minutes) — even the cappuccino tasted a dozen times better than the one I would normally order in Tampa!

We vegged out at our much-coveted Cave Pool Suite for the rest of the day. This is the only day we had booked the suite for and we wanted to enjoy it as much as we could. Also, I took about 100+ pictures that day just from the Cave Pool Suite alone. Haha! It was romantic and dreamy all wrapped up in one!

MYKONOS DAY 2

On our second day, we woke up bright and early then headed straight to the hotel’s free breakfast buffet. The weather was just right so I wore a see-through lace bodysuit with a beige-colored skirt. Then, I accessorized with my black Chanel shopping purse and some white slides from Hermès. (One of the many things I love about traveling is that it allows me to be creative and daring with my outfits. I love being able to wear pieces that I wouldn’t normally sport in Florida.)

After a filling breakfast meal, we checked out of our Cave Pool Suite and was getting ready to check into our regular room (at the same hotel) when the front desk staff informed us that we’ve been upgraded for free to one of their one-bedroom suite with an outdoor private pool. You all can just imagine my excitement! We had asked for a room upgrade the day before and given that the hotel is only 90% full, the hotel was able to accommodate us. One of the perks of traveling in the slow season!

After settling into our new room, we changed outfits and took the hotel shuttle to Mykonos Town. (The hotel shuttle runs 24 hours a day as Mykonos stays up till the wee hours of the morning. Even the Louis Vuitton store there is open until midnight. Bananas!)

Mykonos Town did not disappoint. We walked for miles and miles on its cobblestone street and marveled at its simple beauty. The town had white-washed walls with just the right burst of colors! It was so clean yet also so bold all at the same time.

MYKONOS DAY 3

By the third day, I woke up full of enthusiasm, ready to tackle on another day in this gorgeous island. How can today possibly top yesterday’s adventure? Well let me tell you — life has a funny way of making things work! We packed up our bags as we needed to check out of our room (the one-bedroom suite with the outdoor pool that the hotel gave to us as a free upgrade). We were expecting to finally check-in to the super basic room we had originally booked but as we got to the front desk, something magical happened!

The man at the front desk was able to work something out and now we were being upgraded (for free) to a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom suite with an outdoor jacuzzi! Ahhhhh! We were escorted to our suite by Maria and right when I saw the golden double doors, I knew we were in for a treat!

The suite was larger than our old apartment in Downtown Tampa. Both bedrooms had walk-in closets with motion-sensor lights. The showers were majestic with its white and gold theme. The view of the Aegean Sea from our balcony was breathtaking. The room was perfect in every way! We couldn’t be more grateful!

After getting settled in our suite, we took a 30-minute ferry ride to the sacred island of Delos. This island was home to the Greek Gods at one point in time. It remains uninhabited. No mortal would ever be allowed to be born on its land.

“But a cradle of Gods, as the island has been, no mortals would ever be allowed to die in it either.”

MYKONOS DAY 4

ATV TIME! We rented ATVs and drove around other parts of the island where we haven’t been to yet. In my opinion, this is the best way to get around the island. Exercise caution as the roads in Mykonos are narrow and curvy. There are also buses and cabs that you can take as a means of transportation but the ATV is so much more fun!

A local recommended to eat at Kiki’s Restaurant on the other side of the island. We got to the restaurant but it was a 2-hour wait so we ended up dining elsewhere.

WHY WE CHOSE MYKONOS OVER SANTORINI

Every person that we’ve asked who has been to both recommended Mykonos. And I couldn’t really agree nor disagree as I have never been to Santorini before. All I know is that Mykonos have pristine beaches (25 beaches to be exact) and heavenly turquoise waters. It also offers a great nightlife. The locals refer to this island as the Ibiza of Greece and I find that to be very true. The town never sleeps! Mykonos is also known as the “Island of the Winds” which makes it a perfect place for activities such as windsurfing and sailing. It is Greece’s most famous cosmopolitan island— a paradise right in the heart of the Cyclades.

Someday, I do intend to make it out to Santorini to experience its relaxing atmosphere. You guys can also visit both islands while in Greece since they are only a ferry-ride away from one another.

To date, Mykonos is our FAVORITE trip ever! It exceeded all our expectations and we had such a blast! The island is unique in its own way and I simply cannot get enough of it. I even asked my husband if we can move there. Lol.

WHAT TO BRING/PACK

Eventhough the days are rather warm, I would recommend bringing a light jacket for cool and windy nights. Also, do not forget sunscreen. For as many times as I fell asleep on the balcony, I didn’t have a single bug bite. My husband, on the other hand, ended up with a slew of them. So bug spray might also be good idea.

Don’t wear heels, bring some cute slides instead. The cobblestone streets of Mykonos are hard to walk with heels and platform. Not to mention, the island is also hilly. I wore high heels only when going to dinner at the hotel’s restaurant since it was a short walk.

[ It means ‘bye’ in Greek. ]

I know this was a little lengthy, but I hope this post inspires at least a single soul to sail out to the Aegean Sea and onto the island of Mykonos. If you guys have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me on my Instagram @MarianMaeG and I will be more than happy to answer them!

Our Mykonos trip will be super hard to top as it was just that AMAZING. I cannot wait to see where our passports will take us next!
