Brush Basics 101

PHOTOGRAPHY & GRAPHICS BY ME

Some people collect baseball cards, comic cards, others collect shot glasses & mugs... Me? I collect makeup brushes. It's an obscure obsession that I've come to recognize after the realization that I own 100+ of these bad boys.

Quality and packaging is what I look for when I make a purchase. If the brush is attractive, you've already gotten my attention. Secondly, I test the bristles to see if the hairs are of good quality; it should be soft yet sturdy. Next, I test drive it--pick up product using the brush to see how the hairs grasp on to the product. Now apply it on your hand and pay attention to its consistency. Is the application smooth? Does the brush do its job? If all these tests past with perfection, I am sold and it will come home to join its siblings!

Pricing and Alternatives Brushes can sometimes be very pricey and with each purchase, it really adds up. I've found that Essence of Beauty brushes are superb alternatives! They are sold at CVS and are very affordable. Most of the time, it's sold as a set for no more than $14.99. My favorite is the travel pack of 6 for $9.99 (view here). They've recently changed their packaging from the bamboo handles to a sleek black look. I have yet to try it, but I'm assuming the quality remains the same.

Do you guys have any other alternatives to expensive brushes? I'd love to know! Please share!
